3 Gifts for Christmas – List of Ideas

How to do just 3 gifts for Christmas! Something for fun, something for their soul, and something for their body. Just leave that stocking opening for the candy and small knick-knacks ;)

After researching the origins of Christmas traditions, I found myself drawn to a new tradition I found online. In order to keep Christmas more about Jesus and less about selfishness, some are taking on the tradition of 3 gifts per person – to symbolize the 3 gifts Jesus received.

After reading┬áthe Christmas story, present your children with gifts of gold (something of value they want), frankincense (something for spiritual growth), and myrrh (something for the body). Gold seems pretty straight forward, but frankincense and myrrh gifts can be harder to shop for. That’s why I’ve decided to compile a list and link some examples.

Gold
– a toy
– jewelry
– Chocolate coins
– a gift card or money
– a game

Frankincense
– a bible
– a bible case
– a devotional book
– armor of God play set
– jewelry with scripture on it (link) (link)
– music book of hymns
– worship music CDs
– a gift given to World Vision
– Adventures in Odyssey (link)
– a set of bible verses to memorize (link)
– a prayer journal
– a good Christian book
– Bible games
– framed pictures of verses

Myrrh
– coat, gloves, & hat
– socks and underwear
– pajamas
– soaps and lotions
– gym membership or exercise equipment
– microwave heat packs (link)
– other clothing or shoes

I love the idea of 3 gifts, but I also love the idea of stockings for a couple of small items and candy. Plus, Santa Claus has non-pagan origins, so I’m fine with stockings being from Santa. Story goes that Saint Nicholas put 3 gold balls in the first stockings. These are sometimes represented with oranges.

Stocking Ideas
– chocolate oranges (link)
– card game to share
– hair ties / bobby pins
– small toy cars
– small stuffed animals
– cable organizers (link)
– a flashdrive
– a new toothbrush
– chapstick
– new fingernail clippers

And don’t forget to give to others this season!! Food banks are especially in need at this time of year. If you would like to give a small version of the 3 gifts, consider some chocolate coins, a pocket devotional, and a small lotion.

Fun fact: Myrrh smells like licorice and frankincense smells like pine! You can get essential oils of them online.

If you like it, share it!
